Why Choose a Career Specialist?
Helping Teens, Students and Young Adults in NZ Find Direction and create their early careers on-purpose!
In a world where job markets are changing fast and traditional career paths are no longer guaranteed, figuring out what to do after school isn’t always easy for the teen and their families. Whether you’re choosing NCEA subjects, finishing high school with no idea what’s next, or feeling lost in the workplace, you’re not alone. There’s a lot of pressure to "get it right."
That’s where a career specialist comes in. Think of them as a guide who helps you figure out your strengths, explore your options, and create a plan that actually makes sense for you - not just what everyone else is doing.
What's the Role of a Career Specialist?
We Expand Awareness, Not Only Options!
A career specialist is someone trained to help people work out what they’re good at, care about, and how that can turn into a career or study path. We offer support that’s personal, tailored to your unique needs, interests and goals (even if these are not yet clear).
As career specialists, our role isn’t to simply present more job titles or “left-field” suggestions, it’s to widen the lens through which a young person views work / study and their place in it.
We help them:
Connect who they are to what’s possible. We start with their interests, values, strengths, motivators, and curiosities - the clues they already hold about what matters to them.
Expand awareness gently. Using carefully guided conversation, tools, and reflection, we help them see links between their personal traits and a broader range of roles or industries – sometimes (but not always) ones they hadn’t yet encountered.
Build curiosity and confidence. Rather than handing over a fixed list of careers, we encourage exploration - teaching them how to find information, ask questions, and notice opportunities in unexpected places.
Focus on fit, not novelty. “Left-field” ideas can sound exciting, but if they don’t align with a young person’s emerging sense of self, they rarely resonate. Our goal is to help them discover directions that feel both authentic and achievable.
Sometimes this process uncovers fresh or unexpected ideas — but not always. And that’s okay. Career development is about helping young people understand who they are, what motivates them, and start thinking about who they want to become by opening doors of curiosity - one meaningful conversation at a time.
Sometimes the most powerful outcome from working with a career specialist, isn’t a new option - it’s a deeper “yes” to the one they already knew.
Why Work with a Career Specialist?
Here’s why getting help from a career specialist can make a huge difference:
1. They Help You Get Clear on Your Next Steps
Feeling stuck, confused, or overwhelmed? A career specialist helps you make sense of it all. It’s ok to not have all the answers - they’ll guide you through the process and help you feel more in control, find clarity and direction for what’s next.
2. It’s Personal, Not One-Size-Fits-All
Online quizzes can be fun, but they often miss the mark when done alone. Qualified career specialists use tools, NZ specific knowledge and real conversations to give tailored advice based on you - your personality, interests, strengths, values and goals.
3. You’ll Feel More Confident
Young people often underestimate their abilities or feel unsure about their potential. A career development professional helps you see your strengths, set goals, and take action - so you feel motivated, confident and ready to move forward.
4. It Helps Parents, Too
Parents and caregivers want to help - but sometimes it’s hard to know how. A career specialist bridges the gap, offering expert advice and guidance that gives everyone clear information, empowering families to make informed decisions together.
5. They Know the NZ Job and Study Landscape
Whether it’s trades, university, gap years, apprenticeships, or jumping into the workforce, a NZ career specialist understands national trends, training opportunities, and pathways that align with your teen or young person’s goals.
Who Can a Career Specialist Help?
High school teens choosing school subjects or exploring university/trade/other options.
School leavers who aren’t sure what comes next – study, work, training, travel or self-employment.
Uni students wondering “Did I choose the right course?” or looking for a career direction.
Young people in work and wondering “what else” they can do or transition into.
Parents or caregivers seeking expert guidance for their teen or young person’s future.
